Goin' Mobile
Whether you consider the guy standing next to you on the train with acrobatic thumbs rude, out of touch or a cyborg, don't distract him from his blackberry or iphone, after all, he might just be looking at your site and filling out your contact form information right there and then.
Like it or not, the web is everywhere, and the mobile users are growing, rather quickly I might add. Websites, which grow more sophisticated and content heavy everyday, are not cut out for mobile devices. Using a small phone makes them hard to navigate, see the print, and they are just plain slow. The answer is to tweak the website to deliver a custom made mobile version.
To show you what a mobile site looks like as compared to a regular one, we will use client of mine, Sell Miles Now, as an example. Checking his stats, he saw that he was getting a lot of mobile traffic. The name of the game in his type of industry is to get people to fill out the contact form or call. If the site takes too long to load, if it's hard to see the words, or if filling out the form is too tedious, the potential client is gone.
By adding some software that automatically recognizes what device is looking at his site, the site will change in both content (much less) and in style (much simpler). But there is way to see what the site looks like without having to use a mobile device, and that is by typing in a special code at the end of the url (or just clicking the links below).
The original site is here:
http://www.sellmilesnow.com
however clicking this link
http://www.sellmilesnow.com/?device=mobile
will let you see what it looks like on a phone.
You can switch back to regular by clicking
http://www.sellmilesnow.com/?device=desktop
Now that you understand the basics of mobile device sites, please go online and research the technology, but please, NOT WHEN YOU'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF TALKING TO ME! Uh, sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
